Solanaceae/Nightshades (Tomatoes, Peppers, etc)

One of the most fascinating plant families. A large and varied family with attractive flowers. Plants may be edible, poisonous, medicinal, decorative and sometimes all in the same plant! Many are tropical or sub tropical but seem to tolerate our climate well. Some of the friends you will find here are tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, potato seed, ground cherries and tomatillos. However, this family also includes potatoes, tobacco, petunias, salpiglossis, datura, goji berry and more! Most of these flowers can be found in the Flowers and Decorative plants section of the catalogue.

The tomatoes here are all listed in alphabetical order as opposed to the way they are organized in the catalogue. Also, we are adding tomatoes to the different categories as we come to know more details about each from researching and growing them so the various sub-categories are a work in progress, not all of our tomatoes are classified according to all these criteria (colour, growth habit, fruit size, usage) yet. Thanks for your patience in the various transitions taking place in our operations (new website medium which calls for a very different layout than the paper catalogue, and transitioning from father-Jim’s logical organization styles to daughter-Rachelle’s who is trying to find a balance between what the best and most useful logic is for us and our customers)!

Jaltomata

Our first time growing these delightful fruits in 2013 was a success! Treat them as you would tomatoes in terms of when you start them and when to transplant them. Plants bush out so plant a few feet apart. Produces a heavy yield of small edible green seedy berries with a unique sweet flavour. In addition to eating them on their own, try using them in fruit salads and smoothies. Fruits do not change colour as they ripen but should detach easily from plant. A perennial in milder climates with tuberous roots.

Garden Huckleberry

Garden Huckleberry produces large quantities of small purple-black fruits. They can be eaten raw but are probably better cooked, used like saskatoons or blueberries, or as a purple-blue food colouring. Large plants loaded with clusters of fruits not all of which ripen by frost. We are not offering seed from the current year as fresh seed needs cold stratification to germinate.

True Potato Seed

Potatoes only propagate true-to-type if you plant potato tubers. If you grow potato seeds, you may develop your own potato cultivar(s).

We keep a personal collection of a dozen or so potato varieties that we grow every year. In the fall of 2016, when we were harvesting our potato crop, we collected the small green fruits from the four cultivars that produced “seed balls” that year.

As potatoes are close relatives of tomatoes, the seed is treated in much the same way; processing and starting for example. So, start your tomato and potato bedding plants at the same time and plant them both outside when danger of frost is past. In the first year of growth, you will only get egg-sized potato tubers. If these are stored and planted the following spring, you will get full sized tubers.

Our potato collection has cultivars with white, red, and purple skin, and white, yellow, and “blue” deep purple flesh, so you will get a number of combinations of these characteristics in your potatoes.

The four potatoes in this collection are:

Carlton – white skin, white flesh, early, Canadian bred

Red Wagner – red skin, white flesh, mid-season, bred in USA

Desiree – pink skin, yellow flesh, mid-season, European origin

Red Bintje – red skin, yellow flesh, late, from the Netherlands

You will get about two dozen seeds in a packet which will include seeds from all four cultivars. Seed them all to get the largest sample from which to select the plants you like. Jim will also be growing these four potatoes over the next two years so you can compare notes when the time comes!

Morden Midget Eggplant

We grew an eggplant variety again this year after a long break. Eggplant needs an even longer and hotter growing season than tomatoes or peppers. Start early indoors or grow in a greenhouse. Morden Midget was bred at the Morden (MB) Research Station (1958) to do well in northern growing conditions. The dwarf plants are early producers of medium-sized oval purple fruit.
