Morden Midget Eggplant

We grew an eggplant variety again this year after a long break. Eggplant needs an even longer and hotter growing season than tomatoes or peppers. Start early indoors or grow in a greenhouse. Morden Midget was bred at the Morden (MB) Research Station (1958) to do well in northern growing conditions. The dwarf plants are early producers of medium-sized oval purple fruit.

Sri Lankan simply came to us from a customer in Edmonton in a package with writing in a language we could not read. This eggplant variety has compact plants that grow beautiful fairly early fruits about 3-6 inches long striped purple and white.

Jaltomata

Our first time growing these delightful fruits in 2013 was a success! Treat them as you would tomatoes in terms of when you start them and when to transplant them. Plants bush out so plant a few feet apart. Produces a heavy yield of small edible green seedy berries with a unique sweet flavour. In addition to eating them on their own, try using them in fruit salads and smoothies. Fruits do not change colour as they ripen but should detach easily from plant. A perennial in milder climates with tuberous roots.

Garden Huckleberry

Garden Huckleberry produces large quantities of small purple-black fruits. They can be eaten raw but are probably better cooked, used like saskatoons or blueberries, or as a purple-blue food colouring. Large plants loaded with clusters of fruits not all of which ripen by frost. We are not offering seed from the current year as fresh seed needs cold stratification to germinate.
