Brassica (Cabbage) Family (Roots)

All cabbage family members with the same botanical name will cross with each other so we are including botanical names to help seed savers. The root vegetables radishes and turnips are also in this family. Note that summer turnips will not cross with winter turnips (rutabagas).

Rat’s Tail Radish

Rat’s Tail Radish has a very small inedible root and is grown for its long  seed pods which are harvested when pencil thin. The pods are generally 4” – 8” in length, however the literature says they can get up to 2’ long! Every year we select for deep purple pods, but there is usually a mixture of purple and green. Plants produce pods abundantly and allow you to have radish flavour all season long! Place them on a veggie tray for raw eating, chop raw in salads, or cook them in stir fries. People have even talked about pickling them.
