Other Pulse/Legume Crops

This is a small collection of edible pod, edible seed, forage and plough down crops (as well as decorative!). Some are good for generally one of these uses (like winged pea’s edible pods), others (like Vicia faba) can be used for all four purposes. All legumes are good at replenishing nitrogen in the soil but the first five (not including winged pea) crops listed here are specifically grown for fixing nitrogen. In order to do so, the green plant material needs to be worked into the soil. We have larger quantities of some older seed of a few of these crops and would be willing to sell it at a bulk price.

Black Chickpea

This is a medium sized black chickpea producing reliably in our short season. Chickpeas or garbanzo beans have been grown for centuries as an important food staple rich in protein, B vitamins and calcium. Plants grow to 2’ with numerous inflated pods each holding one or two charcoal black seeds. Seed as early as possible in the spring.

Earth Lentil

A sample of this beautiful lentil came to us from a seed saving workshop attendee in Lac La Biche, AB. The person didn’t know the name of the variety so we have simply named it after what it looks like, a beautiful green planet swirled with blue marbling. A small seeded lentil, probably originally cultivated exclusively in the Puy area in the Auvergne, a volcanic area in the center of France.

Grass Pea

Grass Peas (Horse Lentils) look like large angular grey green lentils. The plants are pretty with their finely divided leaves and blue flowers. Cook like a dry pea. However, eaten in large quantities the neurotoxin present can be harmful, causing Lathyrism (paralysis of lower extremities). Main purpose is as a nitrogen fixing plant for soil health.
