Blanket Flower is one of our showiest native species. It is a clump forming plant that has large yellow daisy-like flowers with orange-red highlights. It grows on dry prairies. This is wild gathered seed.

Lady’s Bedstraw

Lady’s (Yellow) Bedstraw is an English wildflower. On the prairies, our native bedstraws are white-flowered, but this one has many small bright yellow flowers. The plants are mat-forming with weak stems and narrow green leaves. It has been used to curdle milk and colour cheese, especially in Gloucestershire. It is also apparently used as a dye plant, the roots for a red colour, and the flowers for a yellow colour.

Three Flowered Avens

Three Flowered Avens has mostly basal leaves and a naked stalk bearing three pink flowers. Also called Prairie Smoke due to its feathery mauve seed heads resembling plumes of smoke. Wild gathered seed.

Maximilian’s Sunflower has stiff upright plants 2’-3’ tall with narrow leaves. Yellow flowers are a bit larger than the preceding species. Common on prairies and along roadsides. Wild gathered.

Sweet Rocket

Sweet Rocket is a biennial edible flower that readily self-seeds. Flowers are mostly pinks and whites and are known to give off a lovely scent in the evenings (Hesperis is greek and relates to the evening). Leaves can be used as greens in salads and more (for best flavour, pick leaves before the plant flowers). Other culinary and medicinal uses also possible.

Western Blue Flag Iris has bright lilac-blue flowers with darker veins on slender stems to 2′ and grass-like leaves. Likes a moist place to grow. Seed germinates over several months at cool temperatures. Light helps.
