Runner beans have large showy flowers, usually red or white, and will cross with each other (but not with other beans), so some of ours may not be 100% pure as we weren’t aware of this in the beginning. We have known about this now for a while and are more careful when growing different varieties for seed. The standard runner beans are tall plants that have runners from 4′ or 5′ long to twice that length. They like a lot of water and should be given something to climb on. The pods are long and plump, and rough textured. The oval seeds are very large and plump as well. Eat as a snap bean when pods are small, or as a fresh or dry shell bean.
Painted Lady (1827 or earlier) has bi-coloured red and white flowers, and brown and tan seeds.
